Program Design

Over the last 25 years, principals of RDC Group have been retained to carry out policy development, planning, design, and implementation services for a number of U.S. states and dozens of cities and towns throughout Canada and the U.S, as well as private corporations. These projects have commonly involved not only recycling, but also a focus on composting systems. More recently, this expertise is being required in other countries, with projects being completed in the U.K., Costa Rica, Trinidad, Brazil and Puerto Rico.

Project goals for each of our clients vary considerably, tailored to the particular goals and cultural/regulatory environment of the client. However, program design work generally focuses on either the development of waste diversion strategies, or the development of waste reduction policy. Recent examples of these types of work are as follows:

Friends of the Environment
In 1999, principals of RDC Group undertook a recycling feasibility study on behalf of Friends of the Environment, an industry group in Trinidad. As a result of this analysis, RDC Group was retained to design and plan the implementation of several sector-specific recycling pilot programs in 2000.

Xerox Corporation
Principals of RDC Group worked with Xerox Corporation to design and develop a recycling program for a new product line. Work included review of existing systems and practices, review of the reverse-logistics program, as well as design of a new recycling program (1998-1999).

Great Adventure Theme Park
This Brazilian theme park retained principals of RDC Group to design the waste management program for the park. This project involved design of all aspects of the system, including identifying bin placement, recommending bin types, developing employee policy, identifying material flow, and procuring sub-contractors and material markets. (1998-1999)

London Pride
Principals of RDC Group started working with London Pride in 1996, to design a waste diversion program appropriate for the local culture and environment in London, as well as able to adapt to the world-wide trends of producer responsibility. Work included creation of recycling and composting plans for the West London Waste Authority, assistance with special event recycling, market identification, and logistics planning (1996-1998).

Joint Waste Diversion Strategy Study
The County of Simcoe and the Cities of Barrie and Orillia retained principals of RDC Group to create a waste diversion plan for their solid waste stream. In this project, the following steps were undertaken: outline of options which serve to minimize or divert solid waste; research and analysis of each option; development and analysis of optional waste management systems; development and facilitation of all public consultation; and, identification of the preferred system (1996-1998).

Towns of Kirkland Lake and Englehart, and the Township of Larder Lake
In response to a need for employment and the potential for waste being imported for disposal, three towns jointly retained principals with RDC Group to investigate employment opportunities presented through recycling and waste reduction. The resulting report required interviews of relevant representatives in Northern Ontario; review of current and potential waste management programs; identification of the potential waste stream and its component resources; and, identification of resulting economic opportunities (1995-1996).
